Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese Medicine
The premise of a TCM treatment is to determine the ‘pattern of disharmony’ in the body. This is comparable to what biomedicine refers to as disease. The pattern of disharmony is then used to understand each individual’s unique constitution. Just as people can easily observe daily and seasonal weather changes, a TCM practitioner is trained to observe and interpret the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual “weather” changes that occur within the human body. TCM is a unique healing modality as it views every individual as a whole system and considers the dynamic and ever changing landscape of each individual’s health within each TCM diagnosis and treatment.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a component of TCM which engages the natural healing processes of the body. The practice of acupuncture involves the insertion of a fine filiform acupuncture needle into the skin at specific points on the body. The points that are chosen will vary with each treatment according to the practitioner’s whole systems diagnosis of the patient. The needles, in conjunction with the site chosen, combine to provide the beneficial effects produced by acupuncture. The process opens the body channels, allows for free communication within the organ systems, removes blockages and regenerates energy stores, ultimately restoring overall balance and harmony and initiates the body’s ability to heal its self.
A unique feature of an acupuncture session at Act of Balance is the inclusion of the combined use of tuning forks and essential oils. I believe in giving each patient my full and personalized attention for the duration of their treatment and have found that these additional healing elements deepen relaxation and comfort and expand the benefits gained from each session.
In addition, I am always on the look out to provide you with opportunities to actively participate in your own healing process. The take home suggestions I provide can range from dietary support and recipes, to exercises or relaxation techniques. That said, these take home suggestions are simply that – suggestions. I value creating a safe and non-judgmental space for you to take charge of your healing at your own pace.
